To the east of London and immediately south of Chelmsford, in the county of Essex, lies the town of Basildon.
Originally a fairly insignificant settlement, Basildon grew exponentially since being designated a New Town in the 40's, taking in workers from the capital looking for a more peaceful lifestyle. The area's leafy reputation still remains - Basildon district can boast more parkland than any other in Essex, all of which are well tended.
Apart from all the usual retailers in its town centre, Basildon is also a stone's throw from the giant Lakeside shopping complex.
Among a number of interesting attractions on offer in Basildon is the unique St Martins Bell Tower: built to mark the millennium celebrations, this neo-gothic octagonal spire constructed from steel and glass dominates St Martins Square in the centre of town.
